Genesis Cancer Center Launches New Local Chapter to Advocate for Cancer Care

January 5, 2021

Hot Springs, Ark., Jan. 5, 2021 — Genesis Cancer Center (GCC), a partner practice of American Oncology Network, LCC (AON) launches a new chapter of the Community Oncology Alliance Patient Advocacy Network (CPAN).

CPAN is a national advocacy organization committed to raising awareness of independent, community cancer care and the issues that affect it. CPAN plays a vital role in advocating for patients making sure cancer care is affordable and accessible in the communities where they live.

“I am happy and honored to be a part of this newly created local chapter to help fight for patients and their healthcare rights and to make sure their voices are heard,” said Genesis Cancer Center Medical Oncologist Dr. Stephen “Fred” Divers. Dr. Divers also serves on the Board of Directors for the Community Oncology Alliance (COA) dedicated to advocating for community oncology practices and the patients they serve.

The GCC local chapter includes patients, survivors, caregivers, family members, physicians, staff and community members—all working together on national policies that can impact local cancer care.

There are 28 active CPAN chapters across the U.S. advocating in Washington, D.C. to make an impact on influencing policy and expressing the importance of community oncology.

Rose Gerber, Director of Patient Advocacy and Education for CPAN said, “We support the cure but we advocate for the care.” Gerber continued, “Local chapters are important to our cause of educating, engaging and activating cancer care advocates across the nation, helping to ensure patients benefit from quality, affordable and accessible cancer care.”

“Together with CPAN and the other active chapters across the U.S., we will focus on key national cancer issues, the economic and administrative burdens and the pressures that community clinics, like GCC face from an operations standpoint,” said Dr. Divers.

“As a physician-led practice, Genesis Cancer Center is committed to providing personalized and compassionate care. By joining CPAN, the practice has given their patients a platform to advocate against bureaucracy on Capitol Hill, standing up for patients’ healthcare rights,” said Todd Schonherz, AON President & Chief Operating Officer.

GCC and CPAN will work together to combat issues affecting many patients such as limitations on choice of doctors, less personalized medicine, increased hospital care costs, rising medication prices and being forced to travel for care and treatment.
